About PPC

People Protecting Children is a volunteer lobby group that was founded by Allison Ritchie with the purpose of highlighting issues relevant to child safety and achieving legislative and systemic change to eradicate child abuse.

People Protecting Children believes that there is nothing more outrageous than the abuse, exploitation and harm of children – the most vulnerable and precious members of our society.

The initial focus of People Protecting Children was to advocate for legislative changes addressing the sexual abuse of children by restructuring sentencing laws for convicted paedophiles and providing more focus and support for survivors.

Since that time, the issues highlighted by People Protecting Children has broadened to cover a range of areas related to child protection in Tasmania, nationally and internationally. We have put forward proposals that include:

  • Inadequate sentencing of convicted paedophiles.
  • The introduction and broader application of WWVP registrations in Tasmania.
  • Lack of effective sex offender treatment programs.
  • National consistency around mandatory sex offender reporting.
  • National consistency around mandatory sex offender registration.
  • National consistency around age of consent.
  • A request for an investigation into the handling of child protection notifications in Tasmania.
  • The development of a Tasmanian Children’s Database.
  • A request for a review of the oversight and investigation of the processes around foster care placements.
  • A call to protect vulnerable children overseas from convicted paedophiles in Australia or individuals fleeing the country to avoid prosecution.
  • A request for the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to investigate the Tasmanian Department of Education’s history of response to alleged and substantiated cases of child sex abuse.
  • A call for a Tasmanian Commission of Inquiry (The Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings established on 15 March 2021).
  • A request for Local Councils to ensure WWVP registrations are required for people operating Air BNB properties.

All submissions from People Protecting Children have been PPC have put forward as positive and practical proposals to assist in implementing the best possible measures for the safety and protection of children.

People Protecting Children works towards achieving a state where all levels of government, community and individuals genuinely focus on child safety and start putting children first.

People Protection Children welcomes any support from individuals and organisations interested in child protection and acts with respect, integrity and bravery as we strive to stop all forms of child abuse.
